Rethinking School: How to Take Charge of Your Child's Education
2018
My son already attends a private alternative school so I didn’t think this book would be interesting or helpful but I’m tucking away tips for working within the school district system in my memory palace in case he ever needs to return to a traditional school.
Some quotes I highlighted in my Kobo e-reader:
Chapter 3
The tendency is to focus on the child’s slower areas, to spend more time on those in order to move the child into a higher grade. But the result can be that the child ends up evaluating himself by his weaknesses, not his strengths. And this can obscure natural gifts, requiring children to spend untold hours laboring away at subjects they dislike, at the expense of learning in which they excel.
Chapter 4
Psychotropic drugs, less commonly used, should only be prescribed by a qualified psychiatrist, after significant time spent with the child and the family, and should always be accompanied by ongoing talk therapy. (Antidepressants, in particular, should not be prescribed by a family physician or general practitioner. This happens too often.)
Chapter 5
Failure isn’t fatal.
Chapter 6
Children in school are powerless. They have been placed in a situation where they have no freedom of movement, no option to walk away or quit or leave.
