Dungeon Crawler Carl is a science fantasy LitRPG series in which aliens destroy Earth and force the surviving humans to compete in a televised game modeled on Dungeons & Dragons, with Carl navigating the dungeon alongside his ex-girlfriend’s cat. It’s a beloved series, with an average Goodreads rating of 4.50 across more than two million ratings, and I’d heard nothing but praise for it before starting.
I made it just past the halfway point before giving up. The humor never landed for me, the constant videogame-style notifications for kills and loot got old fast, and Carl himself never came into focus as a character. I can see the appeal for LitRPG fans, but this one’s going on my DNF list.
