The trilogy’s finale involves Ada and Rian breaking into a high-security facility to stop nanobots infected with malware from being released on Earth, where they would leave humanity worse off than before. Along the way, Ada also takes the opportunity to steal some valuable tech from the facility, which Rian will have to catch her to reclaim. All the plot threads tie up, the comedy and suspense stay well balanced, and Ada and Rian’s chemistry flares at the right moments throughout, which makes for a satisfying close to the heist side of the series.
As a romance, though, it fell flat for me. After everything Rian learns about the government’s complicity over the course of the series, he goes back to his job with basically no visible change of heart, which undercuts the anti-establishment thread the whole heist plot was built on. And the moment where Ada and Rian finally act on three books’ worth of tension is over almost as soon as it happens, leaving the payoff feeling underwhelming. This was marketed as a romance, and readers expect a happily-ever-after; the publisher’s blurb even promises one, but the ending didn’t deliver that.
