The final book in the trilogy sends Lou to New York, where she takes a job as companion and assistant to Agnes, the much younger second wife of wealthy businessman Leonard Gopnik. Agnes is unpopular in her social circle, since Leonard divorced his first wife to marry her. Lou is quickly pulled into a glamorous world of Central Park runs, shopping, and high-society events, a sharp contrast to the quieter life she left behind in England with her paramedic boyfriend, Sam. Along the way, she meets Josh Ryan, a man who reminds her uncomfortably of someone from her past, and forms a friendship with him while her long-distance relationship with Sam grows strained. The rest of the book is Lou navigating that tension, along with new friendships, misunderstandings, and a fair amount of romantic mess, all in the name of living the way Will once told her she should.
I don’t think the story needed a trilogy. That’s really the core of my issue here: neither sequel had much chance of living up to the original, and this one felt the furthest from it. The writing itself is fine; Moyes clearly knows what she’s doing on a sentence level. But the story dragged in places for me, and even watching Lou try to take Will’s advice to heart and live boldly didn’t land the way I wanted it to. I wish she’d left the story where it ended.
