The Circle
2013
The Circle had a compelling premise, and I found myself enjoying the act of thinking about its ideas more than the act of reading the actual book. The novel starts strong, but the middle drags, and Mae never develops into a character worth rooting for or against; she stays flat throughout. Because the plot is so predictable, the “twist” and ending land with a shrug. Two stars: interesting to ponder, tedious to read.
